{"id":193,"date":"2012-03-24T16:58:09","date_gmt":"2012-03-24T21:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.stellamortis.com\/?p=193"},"modified":"2012-03-24T16:58:52","modified_gmt":"2012-03-24T21:58:52","slug":"john-carter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stellamortis.com\/?p=193","title":{"rendered":"John Carter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rob and I saw <em>John Carter<\/em> this afternoon. \u00a0Rob&#8217;s read the books; I haven&#8217;t. \u00a0I&#8217;m glad we had the chance to see it before the theaters stopped showing it. \u00a0We did see it in 3D&#8211;all the early showings, at least here, are all 3D&#8211;and I thought it was similar to <em>Phantom Menace<\/em>, where the 3D enhanced and gave depth.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"pretty\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-QH5iYHnb-dE\/Tf6GcgX7o8I\/AAAAAAAAACI\/x07kMYV2dEA\/s1600\/John%2BCarter%2BConcept%2BArt%2B%25281%2529.jpg?resize=420%2C247\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"247\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">This doesn&#39;t even do it justice.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The movie is <em>gorgeous<\/em>. \u00a0But that should be expected, since the director is the same guy who made <em>Wall-E<\/em> and <em>Finding Nemo<\/em>. \u00a0And it was <em>fun<\/em>. \u00a0Plenty of action, plenty of romance, and all of it evenly balanced. \u00a0At least to me.<\/p>\n<p>I am sad that the movie&#8217;s not doing that well, and that it seems like the theaters are doing almost everything they can to move it along and get rid of it. \u00a0From one article I&#8217;ve read about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2012\/03\/john-carter-doomed-by-first-trailer.html\">John Carter&#8217;s marketing<\/a>, it did poorly for several reasons. \u00a0The highlights of that article&#8211;Andrew Stanton hadn&#8217;t made a live action movie before, and he was learning as he went so he didn&#8217;t have the flashy action scenes ready for trailers; the first teaser was slow and had no action, and another was all incoherent action.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t help that people saw the trailer and started saying that it was ripping off <em>Star Wars<\/em>, <em>Avatar<\/em>, and other movies. \u00a0Except, ya know, the book <em>John Carter<\/em> is (mostly) based on, <em>A\u00a0Princess of Mars<\/em>, was written in 1917. \u00a0&#8230;Yeah. \u00a0But then, I&#8217;ve also actually heard people say, about <em>Lord of the Rings<\/em>, &#8220;Look, they wrote a book based on the movie.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The score also helped make the movie. \u00a0Now, I want to own it. \u00a0Plus, some of the track names amuse me&#8211;&#8220;The Blue Light Special,&#8221; &#8220;A Thern Warning.&#8221; \u00a0Since the composer is Michael Giacchino, I&#8217;m not surprised. \u00a0Some of the scores I&#8217;ve seen from him have track names like that.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you haven&#8217;t seen the movie yet, go see it. \u00a0And if you have?
