{"id":151,"date":"2012-02-01T12:00:33","date_gmt":"2012-02-01T16:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.stellamortis.com\/?p=151"},"modified":"2012-01-31T22:09:50","modified_gmt":"2012-02-01T02:09:50","slug":"practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.stellamortis.com\/?p=151","title":{"rendered":"Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My high school theatre teacher refused to give anyone a grade of A+ or 100. \u00a0His reasoning was that no matter how good you are, there&#8217;s always room for improvement. \u00a0My supervisor at work is also of this school of thought.<\/p>\n<p>I say they&#8217;re right. \u00a0Pretty much the only time I would disagree is in math. The only way 2+2 does not equal 4 is if you&#8217;re reading <em>1984<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But for writing? \u00a0If you think you&#8217;re the best you can possibly be and don&#8217;t need to improve, well, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not saying that a writer needs to be like George Lucas and always need to change something. \u00a0But always work harder to make the work better each time. \u00a0Most of the authors I love to read do this-each book gets better than the previous, both in the writing and in the storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>People always have weaknesses that could be improved. \u00a0Me, I&#8217;m bad at endings. \u00a0So much so that I never really end anything. \u00a0They all stop abruptly or just trail off.<\/p>\n<p>When they&#8217;re not put aside unfinished, that is.<\/p>\n<p>The plus is that improvement comes with practice. \u00a0Kinda like regular time on a treadmill improves stamina and endurance.<\/p>\n<p>Hey look, I brought it back to exercise.
